In the heart of downtown Elmore stands Kathy's Kitchen, a cozy café that is a beloved focal point for the community. With its warm atmosphere and hearty meals, Kathy's Kitchen is more than just a place to eat—it's where Elmore gathers.
Owned and operated by Trish Holst, with occasional help from her husband Brian and other family members, Kathy's Kitchen is a testament to hard work, community support, and the enduring charm of small-town life. Trish took over the café in 2017, after 16 years as manager at Dairy Queen in Blue Earth and 16.5 years at Hardee's. "I was hesitant to take over the café at first," Trish admitted, "but the support of the area has been great."
This support has been nothing short of extraordinary. When Kathy's Kitchen needed a new grill and roof, community members came together and raised $10,000 to make it happen. During the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the café's loyal patrons continued to rally around it, ensuring it remained a vital part of Elmore.
The café's history runs deep in the community. Before it was Kathy's Kitchen, the building housed the Elmore Eye newspaper and later served as the town's senior center. Under its previous owner, Cinda Hagedorn, the café was known as the Wildcat Café and operated by Youth Services International (YSI). Trish's mother, Kathy, had worked in the kitchen at YSI and at Guenther's Foods before that. Trish decided to rename the cafe in honor of her mom.
Today, Kathy's Kitchen is the only eatery in town, open every day except Tuesday from 6:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. On most days, the café bustles with activity, every table full of regulars and newcomers alike. It's not uncommon for customers to refill each other's coffee cups—a small gesture that speaks volumes about the camaraderie found within these walls. "Sunday is our busiest day," Trish said, noting that her two nieces love to help out on weekends.
For Trish, Kathy's Kitchen isn't just a business; it's a labor of love. "The support of the community has been amazing," she said. That support is reflected in every meal served, every coffee poured, and every smile exchanged in the café. Kathy's Kitchen is more than a café; it's the heart of Elmore.
